Here is a quick and easy list of the items you will need in order to correctly set up a new aquarium.
1. Aquarium- It is best to purchase the largest size you have room for. This will make it easier to maintain a healthy tank.
2. Tank cover and Light- Tank covers keep fish in and pollutants out. Light is very important to the tank. There are basically two types of bulbs, incandescent (screw-in) and fluorescent (long tubes). Fluorescent use less energy, last longer, and provide light without added heat.
3. Table or Stand- Be sure stand can support a filled tank. One gallon of water weighs about 8 pounds.
4. Filter- There are several styles to choose from. Be sure to purchase a filter that will be adequate for the size tank you purchase.
5- Gravel- Gravel should be about 1 to 2 inches deep. Generally about one pound of gravel per gallon tank size.
6. Plants and Decor- Provide a natuarl environment for fish and adequate hiding places.
7. Water conditioner- Needed to remove the chlorine and heavy metals from water to make safe for fish. Also reduces the stress on fish and promotes a healthy slim coat.
8. Net- Always best to have a few different sizes on hand.
9. Heater- To ensure that the water stays at the appropriate temperature for the fish housed. Be sure to select the correct wattage for your tank size.
10. Fish Food- There are many varieties available. Be sure to select the one that is best for your particular fish species.
11. Air Pump- This will provide movement and circulation in the water, providing needed oxygen.
12. Siphon Hose- An easy way to clean gravel and remove water for monthly water changes.
