Basic Set-up List for Your New Birds Needs and Care
Cage: Besides selecting a cage that you think is pretty or suits your decor, please consider the following-
The cage bars should not be wider than the span of your thumb. This is a safety measure to assure your bird does not get caught in between the bars. They are curious little creatures and will try and poke their small heads through the bars.
Seed Cups and Water Container: The cup should provide a days worth of seed and fresh water should always be available.
PolyPastel: This is a one-time purchase health item. This perch is made of coarse ceramic. It is to be placed as the highest perch in the cage. Being the highest in the cage, your bird will perch to sleep on the polypastel and in doing so will maintain nail health and filing. It will also serve as a seecondary beak cleaner.
Toys: This is an important purchase for the mental health of your bird. They love to preen and pull and play with objects that have cloth, fine string, bell clappers, shiny dangles, etc. Birds get bored and can get depressed. Toys add to their enviroment and to the enjoyment brought to them, that in total adds to your enjoyment. *Note: Do not purchase a "mirrored" toy until after your bird has bonded to you.
Bedding: Corncob bedding is a wonderful flooring for your bird. It absorbs waste and water, and makes it easy to clean your birds cage. Floor bedding aids in the maintaining of your birds health.
Food: A balanced diet, specifically designed for your species of bird is necessary. Choose a seed or pellet food for your kind of bird. Treats, such as treat sticks and mullet sprays are super for most bird species. *Also, fresh vegetables and fruits such as broccoli florets, corn, sweet potatoes, apples (w/o seeds) and grapes. to name a few, are also necessary for continued health.
Beak Block: A cuttlebone will provide your bird with the tool he requires to trim his beak and a conditioner will keep it healthy. Some conditioners have minerals and vitamins as additives.
Petamine: This is a wonderful vitamin for your bird. It does not "go bad" so it can be kept in a small cup inside the cage for your bird to eat regularly. This maintains feather and skin health, as well as the general health for your bird.
